Rocketry at Virginia Tech competes in the Spaceport America Cup competition where we fly rockets to a target altitude and compete with teams from all around the world.

GIVING BACK TO THE COMMUNITY

Working with the university and local organizations to educate children and the community about high-powered rocketry and encourage interest in STEAM.

As we gear up for classes tomorrow, we would love to share all that we’ve been up to this summer! The team shipped out to New Mexico for Spaceport America Cup 2024 in June. Inferno, our 2024 competition rocket, featured an SRAD carbon fiber airframe and debuted our redesigned Active Drag System (ADS). The new and improved system deploys external flaps producing an incredible 1,000 ft of altitude control! Rocketry at Virginia Tech was awarded a podium session for the design of the ADS, which was presented at Spaceport by Avionics lead Dawsyn Schraiber and Subsystems lead Ben Anderson. Our team then headed out to the vertical launch area, where we successfully launched on the first day! The team recovered the rocket with no damage, placing in the top 1/3 of 156 teams competing internationally. As we wrap up a busy summer, we are thrilled to kick off the new year and dive back in to high-powered rocketry! 🚀
